ANGELUS

Interview of Angelus by Katy

Angelus is an exciting 3 piece rock band from Basingstoke/London consisting of Richard Deadman (Lead vocals/Guitar), Sean Queenan (Bass/Backing vocals) and Clarke Mancini (Drums/Backing vocals).

The guys have been jamming together for 6 years, at first being known as “Exile”. They recently became Angelus a few months ago when Richard came back from Australia and they started jamming together coming up with new songs and had their first official gig as “Angelus” at the Royal Oak, Basingstoke supporting Moriah, back in July. They went on to do other gigs around the South, in places such as Southampton, London and the most recent, the George Inn in Andover where they were fully appreciated by the audience.

Their influences include a mix of: Alice in Chains, the Beatles, Jon Bonham, Clutch, Glenn Hughes, Vinnie Paul, Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Deep Purple.

They recently released their EP containing four songs; FAR GONE; FUNK YARD DOG; SILVER FOX and STAND ASIDE last month with FAR GONE entering at No.20 on bandsunsigned.co.uk and have also joined myspace, where they have already become more popular by offering their music for people to listen to.

Following on from this, the guys from Angelus agreed to do their first official public interview with us.

Q: So who came up with the name Angelus? Has it got anything to do with one of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Characters?

All: Well, it was Rich and Sean that came up with the name, we found this odd name in a book (think it was the Bible) and it had Van or something in front of it so we decided to cut it down to just “Angelus”.

Richie: No it has nothing to with the character, that’s not why we chose it.

Q: How did you guys first meet?

Clarke: I first officially met Rich when I was 12 or 13 at this party I was DJ for, but meeting officially as a band, that was a while later.

Rich: I went to secondary school with Sean, but a person I went to junior school with (who tried out as a bass player) said that he knew a drummer called Clarke who he went to secondary school with. Then I found out that Clarke lived down the road from me so I went along for a jam and it just carried on from there…

Q: Didn’t you used to be another band or known as something else? Why did you choose to do covers at Silks for a brief period of time then decide to become a band again and write all your own stuff?

All: We were known as Exile for a while, we mainly did a mix of covers and our own work, but then we split up. Clarke and Sean got talking about starting up a band again however they couldn’t be Exile as they found out there was a London band who had won Battle of the Bands known as Exile, and even more recent, a Basingstoke band going by the same name. When Rich came back, we started talking about becoming a band again, and the next day we became one starting with 2 of our songs we had used as Exile.

Richie: The whole Silks thing I set up with me old man and we needed a drummer so we got in Clarke (they go on to joke saying there was no – one else) and we just decided to do a load of covers.

Q: What are the stories behind the four songs on your EP?

All: (begin to laugh as they had not been expecting this question) Err…well… what song shall we start with? FAR GONE? That was about a player really, you know someone playing these women about, having a laugh, messing about. FUNK YARD DOG appears as kind of aggressive; SILVER FOX was really about a relationship/obsession type of thing with a “mature” woman and STAND ASIDE was about going really crazy with some influence of some old stuff, dunno really…

Q: How do you think your first gig at the Royal Oak went?

All: We played quite well we think seeing that it was our first gig as Angelus and our first official time playing together with our new set of songs. We had a touch of nerves though, and we couldn’t get over the size of the crowd, some of the people we didn’t even know but yeah it was good.

Q: What about your most recent gig at the George?

All: It was a really good gig, it was a good crowd, great venue, and it was great supporting Moriah again. Really enjoy supporting those guys, we get along really well with them, its comfortable playing with them as we know them and get along with them and can relate to them more as they are a three piece as well with a similar type of genre. Definitely the best gig we have done so far.

Q: Finally, what are your plans for the future?

All: Well we feel its going really great at the moment, we thought we would give it till Christmas, but its going really well and we are going to try hard and push ourselves to do well. We are in contact with several promotions; we have managed to achieve what we wanted getting loads of great gigs everywhere, especially in London; we have a website; we’re writing new stuff; we have got plans for January and February and we are going to try to get involved with festivals, be part of the unsigned band tents. Basically we just want to get somewhere.

Well massive thanks to the guys for allowing us to do this interview. Real nice bunch of lads who are really into their music, and are determined to make a big name for themselves. We wish them the best of luck for the future.
